Semiarid regions face chronic drought, degrading and fragile natural resource base, low market opportunity, inadequate public investments and attendant agricultural development polices. Even though such regions are the ones with potential to secure a food secure future for India, farmers in such areas are rapidly loosing confidence. Reversing this process and enabling farmers to see the potential for a reasonable livelihood is a development challenge.

CEC addresses them through building blocks such as drought risk control, soil nutrient management and reworking the economics. CEC was successful in development of a three year treatment cycle for fallow lands, non-farm incomes and collective community action. Currently it is working on developing green leaf manure factories to address soil deficiency. The field activities are action research based to provide advocacy inputs to influence macro-economic debates on policies and poverty strategies in semiarid areas.
